This policy is suitable for people and businesses which are looking to cover their liability to the public whilst carrying out their business activities as a licensed boarding kennel or cattery. It is not suitable for those who are only boarding animals within their own homes.
There are four main types of insurance you need if you run a kennel or cattery business. All are included in our insurance policy.
Public liability – designed to protect you against liability claims for injury caused to third parties or damage to their property as a result of your negligence, for instance if a dog escapes and injures a member of the public.
The standard limit is £5 million, but it can be extended to £10 million for an additional premium.
Products liability – this covers your kennel or cattery for up to £5 million if injuries or damages arise as a result of a defective product that your business had supplied. Please note, this is NOT cover for retail sales where you sell any products.
Care, custody and control – cover is provided for any claim made against you for either injury, loss or death of an animal while in the care, custody or under the control of you or an employee. This, however, will not cover any animal owned by you or the business.
Goods in transit – protects against injury to the animals whilst being transported to or from your clients’ homes or to the vets. Please note that this does not provide any cover for the vehicle being used and make sure you have the appropriate business use under your motor vehicle insurance.
Collection and delivery services and boarding of dogs, cats and council strays. If you provide extra services such as day boarding, grooming of non-boarded animals and boarding of rescue dogs, please let us know.
Employers’ liability – if you have paid, voluntary or self-employed helpers working for your business, you are legally required to have this insurance as this will provide cover should they suffer an injury while at work. The amount of cover provided is £10 million.
Personal accident – by including personal accident cover under your policy, you will be provided with a weekly benefit of £100 payable for 104 weeks. This protects the insured party should they suffer an injury whilst carrying out your business activities.
This cover also includes a lump sum compensation for accidental death, permanent loss of sight and/or limbs and total disablement.
We are also able to include employees should they sustain an accidental injury whilst working for you. Specifically, this applies to situations in which you or the business has not been negligent.
Please note that this does not cover any pre-existing conditions or illness, or any injury sustained whilst commuting to or from work.
Professional indemnity – protects your business should you offer professional advice for a fee, such as advising on training techniques, which results in either a physical or financial loss. The resultant claims can be covered up to a standard of £500,000.
Loss of money – provides your business with up to £50,000 annual coverage for the loss of money that belongs to your business or for which you are responsible. It also includes benefits for bodily injuries sustained by you or your employees due to robbery or attempted robbery that occurs during the course of business operations.
Loss of license – provides up to £50,000 coverage for any decrease in the value of your business or premises due to the loss of your license or refusal of renewal of your boarding license by the licensing authority through no fault of your own.
Frozen foods – covers loss of frozen foodstuffs due to freezer breakdown or interrupted flow of electricity for more than 60 minutes. The maximum value covered is £5,000 and the freezer must be no more than 8 years old.
Business interruption – protects against financial losses resulting from damage to your business premises caused by insured perils, such as a severe storm, which may cause temporary interruption or interference in your business activities. Cover for loss due to a pandemic is not covered.
Vet fees – covers incidents where there is no negligence or fault on the business’ part, but a third party still experiences a loss or injury. Maximum cover available is £2,000. For example, a dog breaks its leg from jumping up at the door and lands awkwardly.
Legal expenses - this is designed to protect you from unexpected legal costs arising from business risks. Find out more.
