While you’re busy caring, feeding and fetching, we’ll take care of sourcing your insurance.
Working with animals can be very rewarding but it can also come with unforeseen risks. That’s why you need animal business insurance from a broker who loves and understands animals as much as you do.
GET A QUOTE & BUYCliverton has over 50 years’ experience providing insurance for animal businesses like yours. We love animals too. We have dogs galore at home – and in the office!
This policy automatically covers up to six dogs for home boarding, dog walking, pet taxi, house and pet sitting or pet home visits.
As a team of animal lovers, we are committed to finding the right cover for your pet business while you walk Walter, feed Freddy and drive Dennis!
This insurance policy is suitable for people and businesses who wish to cover their public liability whilst home boarding animals, walking dogs, providing pet taxi services or home visits. It is not suitable if you are looking for vet fee or liability cover for your own dog or pets.
There are five main types of insurance you need if you run a pet sitting, minding or taxi service business. All are included in this insurance policy.
Public liability – designed to protect you against liability claims for injury caused to third parties or damage to their property as a result of your negligence, for instance if a dog escapes and injures a member of the public.
The standard limit is £5 million, but it can be extended to £10 million for an additional premium.
Products liability – this covers the business up to £5 million if injuries or damages arise as a result of a defective product that your business had supplied. Please note, this does not cover you for products which you sell.
Care, custody and control – cover is provided for any claim made against you for either injury, loss or death of a dog while in the care, custody or under the control of you or an employee.
Non-negligent cover – covers incidents where there is no negligence or fault on the business’ part, but a third party still experiences a loss or injury. For example, a dog is being walked in a grassy area and cuts its paw on some glass - this could not have been prevented.
Loss of keys – if you are looking after a customer’s keys as part of your business, we provide cover should the keys be lost or stolen from either you or an employee, or locked in a building.
The policy will cover you to walk a maximum of 6 dogs at anyone time and includes walking dogs off lead (prior written consent is required).
Animals covered include dogs and cats, small domestic animals (such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters), horses, ponies and donkeys (basic care only), reptiles and birds (such as snakes and budgies), and domesticated farm animals (such as chickens, sheep or goats).
It also includes cover for your immediate family (spouse, partner, child over the age of 16) or parent (if they live with you) to help you out with your business. This allows family members to assist you, such as feeding the dogs whilst they are staying with you. Please note that this extension excludes house sitting in other people’s homes or any injuries they may sustain.
For pet taxi businesses, we also recommend you discuss your service with your motor insurer.
Employers’ liability – if you have paid, voluntary or self-employed helpers working for your business, you are legally required to have this insurance as this will provide cover should they suffer an injury while at work. The amount of cover provided is £10million. If you have or are thinking about having school age work experience, please contact us.
Personal accident – provides financial compensation if the insured party is unable to work due to an injury or illness, lasting for more than 7 days. If you already have a public liability policy with us, you can either add this cover to your existing policy or consider our stand-alone Cliverton Protect policy, to which you can also add sickness cover and offers benefits like 24/7 worldwide coverage. We can offer various levels of cover to suit you and your business so please either call or email the team to discuss your options.
Please note that this does not cover any pre-existing conditions or illness.
Events, shows and fundraising – we can cover one-off and multiple events, shows and fundraising in connection to your business.
Equipment and property – we can cover your business’s property and equipment, from small items (such as leads and collars) to large (such as office equipment). We are also able to arrange cover for commercial premises, business interruption, theft of money and your home. If you also need cover for equipment or property damage, please contact us. If you are running your business from your own home, we recommend that you notify your home insurer.

"I have one dog called Doug, a Cocker Spaniel - but I would have hundreds if I could! We love going for long walks on the beach or in the pinewoods.
My favourite thing about working at Cliverton is the team - including all of our 4-legged friends who are in the office daily. We have such a great work dynamic, and all share the same passion when it comes to our customers and our love of animals.”
